The Piennolo tomato grown on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius for centuries, and since 2009, has a Protected Designation of Origin, applied to it, owes its history to the locals who weave a twine tied in a circle, cherry tomatoes, to form a large cluster (the piennolo), hanging them in a dry and ventilated place. Their tough outer skins protect the juicy pulp, rich in anti oxidants and nutrients, to be enjoyed over the winter months in the Campania region.
Tomatoes are a major source of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to many health benefits. Tomatoes also contain Vitamin C, Vitamin K & potassium. An average sized tomato, contains only 20 calories!
