Gragnano, a sparkling red wine, served chilled

Move over Prosecco, sparkling red wine is in fashion! Italians normally avoid wine with pizza. The drink of choice is usually a chilled beer. However, there is one exception: Gragnano, the frizzante red that comes from the town of the same name on the Sorrento Peninsula outside of Naples.

Drunk young and served chilled, Gragnano has a touch of sweetness, a smoky finish, and a slight effervescence that cuts the fattiness of cheese and oil. The origins of this wine date back over 1500 years in the monasteries in the hills outside of Naples. It’s a very versatile wine which pairs very well with cheese, meat dishes & of course Neapolitan pizza.

Tasting Notes: Fruity with persistent red fruit notes. On the palate it is full bodied, pleasant & elegant. Serve at 12°C

Grape: Piedirosso, Aglianico,Sciascinoso

Soil Type: Volcanic, sandy

The Vine: Guyot at 800m above sea level

Harvest: Late October

Vinification: After hand picking, the grapes are macerated for 3 days. Bottling in November

Alcohol Content: 12%

Absolutely divine! I do not normally drink red wine, but I do like my bubbly so I thought I’d try it as it came highly recommended and I can truly say it deserves all 5 stars! It has a fruity taste with just a light effervescence and is as dry as a Cava or Prosecco would be, so do not be put off if you find red wine too dry normally like I do as this is very palatable.
