Description

On the island of Ischia, off the coast of Naples, the Antonio Mazzella vineyard has been producing wines since 1940.

Located on the southern side of the island at 150m above sea level, the road and soil conditions were poor, and as a result, cultivating grapes was difficult at the best of times. Not to unperturbed, the Mazzella family persevered, and today the area is productive and sustainable with 10 hectares of land under vine.

Here, local varieties Biancolella, Forastera & Piedirosso grapes are grown in steep inclines, with the terraces facing the sea, the wine makers use a monorail to navigate the site.

This Biancolella is grown at the eastern part of the island of Ischia, 100 metres above sea level, in the Punta del Lume area commonly called “o’ lummo”.

The area took its name from a rock ridge that had the appearance of the light. The grapes are harvested in the first ten days of October, slightly overripe, the pressing still takes place in the ancient way in small caves dug into the rock.  The must obtained remains cool in these caves for 12 hours, then it is transported by sea on wooden boats to the village of Ischia Ponte and then to the cellar in Campagnano, where it will be vinified.

Grape Variety: Biancolella

Production Area: Municipality of Ischia, Punta del Lume

Tasting Notes: Pale straw yellow in complexion, on the nose, floral and ripe stone fruit. On the palate the taste is fresh, delicate and slightly savoury.

Alcohol: 13%

Serving Temperature: 8-10C

Ideal With: Ideal with fish or cheese dishes

Neapolitan Style Baked Sea Bream
